This 5-spice powder mixture is from the famous traditional Hong Kong sauce factory Mee Chun. This specific mix is a variation with aniseed and dried ginger, while some other more common mixes use star anise and cloves. 5-Spice powder is used in many Chinese dishes, like the famous Cantonese roasted duck, beef stew, red cooked pork belly and numerous pressed tofu recipes. The spice mixture combines the 5 basic flavours of sweet, sour, bitter, savoury, and salty. Advise is to use it in small amounts, it's taste is quite overpowering.
